Thefirst object of the painter is to make a flat plane appear as a body in reliefand projecting from that plane. May 2, , Cloux, Fr. His Last Supper and Mona Lisa are among the most widelypopular and influential paintings of the Renaissance.

His notebooks reveal aspirit of scientific inquiry and a mechanical inventiveness that were centuriesahead of his time. Bya happy chance, a common theme links the lives of four of the famous masters ofthe High Renaissance -- Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian. Each beganhis artistic career with an apprenticeship to a painter who was already of goodstanding, and each took the same path of first accepting, then transcending, the influence of his first master.

The first of these, Leonardo da Vinci , was the elder of the two Florentine masters. He was taught byAndrea del Verrocchio , an engaging painter whose great achievementwas his sculpture. Verrochio also had considerable influence on the early workof Michelangelo. Verrocchio's best-known painting is the famous Baptismof Christ, famous because the youthful Leonardo is said to have paintedthe dreamy and romantic angel on the far left, who compares more than favorablywith the stubby lack of distinction in the master's owm angel immediatelybeside him.

Therehas never been an artist who was more fittingly, and without qualification, described as a genius. Like Shakespeare, Leonardo came from an insignificantbackground and rose to universal acclaim.

This book is painful and long winded. There are other books on Leonardo that at least give a more balanced view of his life. This book makes it seem like one of the greatest geniuses in history, the man that practically invented the idea of the Renaissance Man, sat around thinking about not eating meat, how good he looked, and having sex with men most of the time.

We need more of that. Just a thought. The last page I have of each of these chapters ends in the middle of the sentence, yet the next page is the next chapter. Hopefully this is fixed soon. Really liking Walter Isaacson biographies. Isaacson is really qualified to write books.

He has written so many good ones. The images scattered around pages instead of a bunch of pictures in the middle. I know Isaacson does this in many books but I really loved how he did it in this one. Great book! More by Walter Isaacson. Steve Jobs Walter Isaacson 4. Leonardo da Vinci Walter Isaacson 4. The Innovators Walter Isaacson 4. His life should remind us of the importance to be imaginative and, like talented rebels in any era, to think different.

This is a monumental tribute to a titanic figure. Walter Isaacson is at once a true scholar and a spellbinding writer.
